Listening to Mary and Method Man as I sit with my favorite glass of COVID 19 Black Box Cabernet (yep I’m drinking boxed wine). Thinking about all the new things I’m learning about myself while singing along with the words to this song, the same song that introduced Mr. and Mrs. Lesure to the world for the first time almost six years ago.
As I reminisce over the lyrics I begin to think, what are some of the things I need to get by?
Knowing that after this pandemic the world will never be the same, I had to first get clear about the meaning of BY. I’m not trying to ball out or be super needy by wanting to have all of my needs met. So making this list was quick and simple, nothing fancy or too serious, I just need to get by.
A pen and paper. If I can write I can figure some shit out. Sometimes thinking about it confuses me and stresses me the hell out, but writing it makes it plain for me. I can get by.
Twenty Dollars. I guarantee you I can make some shit shake with $20. As a single mother with three kids, twenty dollars would last me an entire week. Real talk. Twenty dollars is still all I need to get by.
Blue Jeans/Black Slacks. All I need is one pair of each. I will mix and match the hell out of these pants. In my mind every time I put on a different shirt, I’m cute as hell. Periodt.
Cooking, Music & Wine. I love to cook and wine down. The music playing in the background becomes elevator music because my thoughts are all over the place. I reminisce the entire time. The best thing about this time is that it always makes me think about my mother. This is what we do. Music, drinks, food and all kinds of crazy conversations. It brings tears of joy to my eyes every time I think about it.
And of course, I had to save the very best for last, My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is all I will ever need to get by. My pastor always says, “All that I am and all that I hope to be is because of the good God I serve”. My sentiments exactly.
